I wrote the story after watching 'BEBE ZEVA' + an episode from season three of The Wire.

corium magazine published my short story 'savannah'. Much thanks and gratitude to the editor Lauren Becker. Working with Lauren was one of my favorite experiences working with an editor and I enjoyed going through the process with her.

I have recently finished reading HORROR HOSPITAL + GUIDE both by Dennis Cooper. I recommend both very highly.

The image that is posted was made by Michael Inscoe. Also reposted because of a few requests piling up in my inbox is a video directed by Michael adapted from my short story 'the rivalry of dancers', originally published by Metazen and is forthcoming in my first collection of short stories YOU PRIVATE PERSON from Scrambler Books (2012). Please enjoy.

Last night, Frances and I went to go see Robert Lopez read at Elliott Bay and later had drinks with he and his friends with Matthew Simmons. Robert is to publish a short piece by me in his NO NEWS TODAY. I was very affected by the reading and meeting Robert afterwards was a joy. His approach to writing and performing is very close to what I would like to accomplish in writing in that his confidence does not disrupt the gentle thing his does line by line but it compliments as though he is a narrator in a film an aggression to create beauty in suspense in narrative and strange understanding. All his books reveal this pleasure. We spoke together about commas and other things.

Because it was such a strange party, Frances and I spent most of our time watching Robert from a short distance on the patio outside the bar and sharing drinks with the very sweet and thoughtful Matthew Simmons. Before the night ended I wanted to start a black metal band with Matthew and get tattoos while drinking bourbon in a basement somewhere.

MDMA (20 JAN 2011) is the first feature film from MDMAfilms which is an "extreme mumblecore"/"drugcore"/"emo" film/documentary/"event converage"/production company established "16 NOV 2010" by Megan Boyle and Tao Lin. Lin first dropped information re MDMAfilms on his blog on the same date.

MDMA is 1 hour 54 minutes, shot in real time using the camera from an APPLE MAC BOOK some time in late 2010 in New York City. The film follows Megan Boyle and Tao Lin throughout their experience of taking MDMA (sometimes called pure ecstasy or Molly) while they explore New York City.

One scene displays a tender conversation between Boyle and Lin in the back of a taxicab discussing their popularity in grade school and past romances. Earlier in the film, B and L are sitting together on the subway, showing each other things on the laptop. Lights and images are seen reflected inside the lenses of Megan Boyle's glasses.

Tao Lin gradually rests his head on her shoulders and stays quiet.

Each package is personal and unique. I remember feeling happy when I saw the package on my kitchen table.

I waited until all my work friends and I had shared a night off together to watch the film. I was pushing for a midnight screening of MDMA at our independent movie theater. Everyone came around at the same time. Jason arrived with beer and Peter behind him in the hallway had more beer. They arrived smiling and almost picturesque. A few ceiling lights were flickering on and off. Although Frances was not there, I called her on speakerphone and everyone said Hi to each other. Jason even waved at me. Five minutes after, when we hung up the phone and said Goodbye to Frances, more people were gathering in the hallway and knocked on my door.

In my monotone, I told everyone Tao Lin stayed here in my apartment once.

The girls there were pouring their drinks and then pointing at my cat, Theo.

My cat was running back and forth around in my apartment, which he does around new people.

My friend Peter said he loves context.

I said, Tao Lin is allergic to cats.

Everyone became comfortable on the couch and on the carpet in front of the television.

We watched the film in three sittings with two cigarette breaks. The wine and the beer had not last the night. My friends remarked about how much they loved the pink dvd title screen. I realized while watching some of the ways of how the film was made. I was looking for the narratives in the film for my mind to follow. The film was spending an uncut and raw 1 hour 54 minutes with Megan Boyle and Tao Lin. The time in the film was in real time. Sometimes the footage would blink because APPLE MAC BOOKS tended to do that. I recognized music from LESS THAN JAKE and IRON & WINE. When we finished, no one had left early. Although I was touched with the viewing, I understood almost immediately that MDMA was difficult to watch.

I turned the lights back on and offered water to everyone. I watched their eyes readjust and people shifting.

Peter said something. He said he needed more context. He said, but he thinks he likes it. Everyone asked me more about who Tao Lin was, who Megan Boyle was.

My request for a midnight screening was rejected and MDMA was deemed by my supervisors as too hard to watched. I watched it again by myself at home and took notes while pausing the screen sometimes.

I started to think of the action out loud as scenes/sentences as I saw them happening on the screen.

The sentences were calm and minimal:

Megan talks while having a red apple. Tao spins around in a circle in front of Megan. There is a female voice on the intercom in the subway and beeping noises in the acoustics. They sit down together in the train and smile into the camera. They talk about music and the band AT THE DRIVE IN.

I brought the film along with me to Seattle to watch with Frances. We watched it in two sittings, half in the evening and half during the morning after in her apartment. Often, we laughed and talked during the viewing. We said things to each other like Tao has writing on his hand, and Megan seems really nice.

This was wonderful to watch but hard to explain why. I think when watching movies, we are subscribing to this strange cinema contract, wherein the director(s) provides deep and often complicated questions, so then the viewer is obliged to mull those questions over. The movie is good or the movie is bad. The viewer often takes one side or the other.

You often feel a sense of urgency to decide whether or not the movie was bad or if the movie was good or whether or not you enjoyed the viewing experience or whether or not you will advertise how the experience has affected you and your life.

MDMA really subscribes to "fuck that contact". The strange cinema contract between filmmaker and viewer is null and void and radically critiqued. This effect is refreshing.

The film is simple but not easy. The plot is executing and playing out an idea: Megan Boyle and Tao Lin take MDMA together and film themselves with a MACBOOK. It has no real point.

Because of this detachment, the film is soothing because it creates a new kind of viewing. It feels equivalent as leaving music left playing from a record player in the background. I don't feel obliged to anything while watching MDMA. I am just free to watch. Highly recommended.

It is also nice to see the chemistry between Megan and Tao.

Earlier this week, I came home from a hard day at work to an envelope addressed from Megan Boyle. Inside was a sweet note, some photographs, and a copy of 'BEBE ZEVA.' I was happy like a fat kid during a hot good pizza. I felt the happiness of eating pizza without eating pizza.

Philip Rex Huddleston adapted my short story OLD TAMPONS into a short film. The short story first appeared in NEW WAVE VOMIT and then later in print in POP SERIAL 2. The film stars Michael Inscoe, Meggie Green and Melinda Wheeler. Much thanks and gratitude to the cast and crew, especially to Philip Rex Huddleston.

I have recently sent out a new edit of my first manuscript you private person: stories. The word count is a little over 30,000.

I am currently working on a story titled LESLIE CHEUNG JUMPS OFF MY BUILDING CLOSES HIS EYES AND THEN SINGS A SONG WE BOTH KNOW AND LOVE.

The other day I sent Frances a text message that read Your mouth, of course, is a pictureless room in which an afternoon's gods get lost.

I am replaying ENTER THE VOID (2010) in my head when I am doing chores around the house and when I feed my cat. I pick up and put down the phone and remember things I have to do and live out, in between re-imagining scenes of transitioning bird eyed views of building tops. I do this for movies I like and don't like. I am going to write a double review for ENTER THE VOID and MDMA (20 JAN 2011) by Megan Boyle and Tao Lin, re the two viewing experiences and how they were similar.

housefire published my short story titled 'the first time (or someone like me would have a chance in a movie).' Much thanks and gratitude to Riley Michael Parker. I am paired with xtx and her lush new first time story. I have read her story maybe ~3 times now.

housefire is a sister / cousin site of metazen. They are solicited fiction reviews and interviews. All the pieces are conducted by prompts and the creative impulses of Riley Michael Parker and friends. TWO-FIFTY is their forthcoming chapbook. Yesterday rumors surface from Little Rock, AR. From the house where Michael lives with Philip Rex Huddleston / we ate the book. While online chatting with my girlfriend ~around noon, I receive notice they have adapted and scored my short story 'old tampons' into a short film. OLD TAMPONS is directed by Philip Rex Huddleston and Michael Inscoe. Music is composed by Philip Rex Huddleston. It stars Michael Inscoe, Meggie Green and Melinda Wheeler. Frank Hinton interviewed me for fix it broken / the youth is write series. The interview is a video of Frank taping our facebook chat conversation while she surfs the web and explores information.

We talk about Vietnam, minimalism, BLOWING UP LOS ANGELES, other writers and friends in the online lit scene, and my girlfriend.

I recommend watching the interview in full screen with good emotional music playing in the background. During the interview Frank is listening to Love Cry by Four Tet among other things. On my end The Execution of All Things by Rilo Kiley has been playing on repeat for a few days and all throughout the interview. We both listen to Ween.

My favorite moment in the interview is when Frank revises a sentence in between chat messages. The real time quality of the video has a mesmerizing effect for the viewer. The cursor becomes strangely comforting and warm. One person is waiting and the other is reading.

Greg Dybec, the founder and editor in chief for the journal, is onto something. The interview series features:

Prodigal 23 yr old poet from Chicago, Steve Roggenbuck, has designed a new blog for me. Thank you for looking / surfing through my new site. The design is among some of the best I have seen anywhere online or in real life.

Steve Roggenbuck (b. 1987) is the author of the poetry chapbooks i am like october when i am dead and DOWNLOAD HELVETICA FOR FREE.COM. His work has appeared widely on the internet. His first chapbook, which Steve released into the public domain, will be celebrating its three month anniversary. He his poetry and his design work has been linked / mentioned many times by the likes of Ron Silliman, Tao Lin, and Stephen Tully Dierks. He has work forthcoming everywhere until the end of time.

I think of the words prolific and talent and god damn when I read Steve's work / when I hear about a new project he is undertaking. Please check out what he has been doing with his time for the benefit of your time. Steve also writes very thoughtful essays and book reviews.
